Operation HASTINGS

Brownie

I served with "Brownie" and the others of India Company, 3/5 1st Marine Division. I was there that day in the stream bed when we where ambushed. Our Platoon, the 3rd, had point that afternoon. We rounded a corner and all hell broke loose. Brownie and others were right up front, and were the first to come under heavy fire from NVA. We lost him and many others that late July afternoon.

I remember being in Hawaii with Brownie and others during our trip over. We spent one rip roaring night out drinking and having a good time. I remember all of us sleeping under a park bench, on the beach that night. I remember Brownie and I standing at the edge of the water that night, talking and throwing an empty beer bottle into the ocean. Talking about when we were going to come home someday. Brownie was a small man by size, but big in heart and a lot of fun to go and party with.

Take care buddy,
Tom Gainer
