Pfc.
Raymond Hengels served with the 3rd Battalion 5th Marines,
Mike Company. He was Killed In Action during Operation SWIFT. His
name stands proudly on the Mike
3/5 Wall of Honor. Semper Fi, Brother Marine. We will never forget.
One
of our heroes
I
was Ray's Company Commander on 4 Sept 67 when two companies of 3/5
went into the Queson Valley to assist two other companies of another
battalion who were surrounded by North Vietnamese. Ray fought and
died along with 17 other Marines and Sailors that day while serving
with M Co. Those gallant warriors are remembered daily by those of
us who were there. They are a part of us and will remain there for
the rest of our lives. For most of us, Vietnam was an experience we
could not talk about. Combat is unexplainable. But we have ensured
that Ray and the other heroes of M Co 3/5 will be remembered not only
be us, but by future generations through a memorial written on bricks
at the Memorial Walkway surrounding the Marine Corps Museum at Quantico,
