We
were buddies together in Mike Co. 3/5
I
was running an airstrike about 500 meters away when a piece of shrapnel
hit Alan Lyman in the chest and fatally wounded his heart. He lasted
only seconds. It may have been a secondary explosion, or a ricochet
from the 250 lb. bombs we were dropping, but it happened. The safety
distance for a 250 lb. bomb explosion was 250 meters away and we were
twice that distance. That morning before he and I went out, we said
our usual, "It was nice knowing Ya," but this time it was
true and I have always thought what if we had done something differently.
He was the last new guy I would ever be close to. It hurt too much.
He was a great guy. Semper Fi~Jim Blankenheim
